Does it seem that as you get older, time passes more quickly? You're not imagining it - it really does! There are actually several reasons for this. The main reason is what psychologists call the Habituation Hypothesis. Since our brains want to conserve energy, we tend to get into routines, whether it's a route to work, fixing dinner or getting dressed in the morning. Because of that, many of the small things that make one day different from another vanish, making for fewer unique moments being recorded by the brain, therefore time seems to pass by much more quickly. When you're a kid, everything is new, and most days are a learning experience, so your brain is rarely on autopilot and you notice much more, leading to time seeming much slower. There are also physical reasons for time seeming to fly by when we get older. Dopamine levels drop as we age, which affects our sense of time, and heart rates even have an impact. So, if you want time to slow down, get out of your routine and try some new things. Also, quit multitasking because if you do a bunch of things at once, you probably won't remember doing any of them.
