1) Is there a message to the songs on the new album Rebel Transmission? Do you craft an album so that the songs work toward a singular point/theme?
The title Rebel Transmission comes from a lyric in the chorus of the first track called "Radio Ghost Town." It encapsulates the theme behind the entire album: that music from a distinctly Christian worldview is subversive in a way. We're broadcasting a different message than the message people receive from mainstream media, and it's one that hopefully encourages and ministers to listeners.
2) What can a listener expect to hear sonically on the new album? How is it different from past projects?
This album differs from the last two in the way it was produced. This is less "live-off-the-floor," with all four guys recording together like the last time. Instead it's a bigger production vision featuring more guest musicians than ever before, most notably the old school horn arrangements by Chops Horns on four tracks. It's Newworldson's version of a pop record.
3) What's the story behind your current single "Learning to Be the Light"?
"Learning to Be the Light" is a song about allowing our lives to be our message. It's about being that city on a hill that cannot be hidden. We want the world to know us by the love we show for one another. It's a day to day process of letting go of our judgment and self-righteousness and showing people mercy and grace instead.
4) Do you have a favorite song on the new album?
That's impossible. It would be like favoring one child over another.
5) Do you have a favorite place to play?
We've been invited to play so many wonderful places, but the Kingdom Bound festival at Darien Lake, NY is the best. We look forward to that every year. Such amazing hearts behind it all.
6) Do you have any inspiring or humorous stories from recent radio visits?
We love giving Americans a crash course on Canadian vernacular, especially the ubiquitous "eh?" Which always seems to come up as a topic of interest on air. I'm usually pressed to list the differences between our two cultures like I'm a qualified representative. But other than our obsession with hockey and maple syrup, I know listeners are a bit disappointed when they learn we share far more in common than they thought.
7) Are there any summer tour plans in the works? Will you be hitting the festival circuit?
We will be all over the map this summer playing festivals in North America, the UK and Europe. The best way for people to stay updated is by visiting our website: newworldson.com.
8) What song do you wish you had written?
"Heaven Help Us All" by Stevie Wonder
9) Fill in the blank: I can't start the day without:
A hot shower. Then I walk my dog.
10) Do you have much time to check out other artists' music? What are you listening to right now?
Two of the newer releases we've been listening to are The Road From Memphis by Booker T. Jones and Mission Bell by Amos Lee.
