1. Brief History / Synopsis
I grew up back and forth from the Jersey Shore to southern California; I've always been a beach girl. Now I'm in Nashville, TN, a leap of faith led me here. I walked through many challenging times with my mom, including abusive remarriages, being very poor and spending a lot of time in other people's homes including battered women's shelters. In these times I found a deep relational Savior. He was my Friend, Protector, Teacher, Security, Counselor, Provider, Comfort, Peace, Wisdom and Strength. Up until 8yrs ago I worked, retail, sales and served tables at restaurants. It's been a long road to get here.
2. What does a normal day at home look like for you?
When I am not traveling... I set my alarm for 7am, I'm up getting my girls dressed, fed & ready, then I'm off to take them to school. Coffee is a must, grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning house, meetings, business, writing, recording, then off to pick the girls back up from school. When they are home its time for homework, prepare dinner, get kids ready for bed... Then back to work and husband/wife time. My Family is my Greatest Joy!
3. What's the song that you just can't get out of your head right now?
"Jesus at the Center," Israel Houghton - He is my favorite Worship Leader. His music always breathes life, love & favor and strengthens my focus. I'm so thankful for ALL of his music. It has pretty much been the soundtrack of my heart & home for the past decade.
4. How much do you travel, what are the challenges? How do you juggle life on the road with wanting to be home?
It was very difficult the first couple years trying to figure it all out. But now, it has all fallen into place very well. We are not gone that often, usually twice a month but different seasons vary though. When we are gone, we know the girls are home having the time of their life with people they love and love them very much, like Grandma or very special close friends, so it gives us peace to do what we have to do. They pray for us and understand where we are going, why and what we are doing.
5. What's the biggest "God moment" that you've ever experienced, personal or professional?
I've had too many it's overwhelming really! But the first one that I can remember is having a supernatural encounter when I was very young and seeing and feeling the tangible embrace of God.
Others would be when God revealed Jack to me as my husband! It was as though the veil was removed from my eyes! I just cried with happiness. He is my greatest blessing and gift from God.
I've had a vision dancing with Jesus that really increased my level of intimacy! The Song, "Dance with The King" from the Joy album was birthed from that supernatural moment. He is inviting us into His presence, into the fullness of His Love, there, every question fades away and Peace reigns, we are transformed and Joy consumes us.
6. What's the last book you read?
Bloodline of a Champion by Mark Hankins
This book is powerful it reveals how God sees us through the blood of Jesus and accepts us based on the condition of His perfect sacrifice. When we honor the blood, the Holy Spirit can move and work in our lives. We can no longer be defeated. We by faith have the right to be transformed by a blood transfusion with the undefeated, undisputed Champion. We are Winners through a new bloodline - The Bloodline of a Champion.
7. Tell me how & when you became a believer. What caused you to want to serve God in full time ministry?
I've always used singing as way to communicate with God since I was very young. I had a very challenging childhood, and singing helped me to find comfort and assurance. I think when people began to respond emotionally to the songs I would write or sing I knew that this was something greater than just me and for me, and my desire grew to use it to help others find that same comfort and peace it gave me. When I married Jack everything fell into place, of course for the first couple years we served tables and worked very hard sometimes even doubting if this was what God wanted... But God always found a way to encourage us to keep going.
8. Take us thru a couple songs on your latest project, "Champion".
Champion - Someone coming from a broken home and without the traditional churched background, I've seen it all, and experienced too much to tell. God's unfathomable grace and love has changed and made me new. Therefore, I'm a lover and a believer in new things. I've also had many lonely moments that have forced me to dive deep into my Fathers heart and find refuge, healing, wisdom and turbo style strength. The broken places are where the beauty of wholeness begins. I know undoubtedly that I am His and He is mine and when you Know who you are, no one can tell you who you aren't. I am convinced that I am a Winner, even when I feel like a loser, because of what my Champion has already guaranteed to me. I can win because He Won. Through His Blood, which changes Everything - I too can be a Champion.
"Pioneer"- As an independent artist, we decided to travel down roads that are not paved, but that are long, hard, full of potholes and curves and very rocky. We knew this would not be easy, but we were willing to fail, to grow, to take risks, to make new discoveries, jump over doubt and believe God can use even us to do something extraordinary if we don't give up, pray through and press on. God has called us all to make a difference in this world it's so important to know that if we are willing He will grant us a pioneering spirit to do everything that He has called us to do to expand His kingdom. We all have a role to play, we are all uniquely made, we can't afford to be afraid to go to the unknown. Why not just jump over doubt, dive into believe, take the lead and see, that uniquely we can all be pioneers?
9. What organization/service group are you affiliated with?
Kids Alive Int. rescues orphans and vulnerable children around the world, nurturing them with quality care and sharing with them the transforming power of Jesus Christ so they are enabled to give hope to others. I was asking God how I could be a part of something bigger than myself... I was wanting to do something more, give back more... I found an endless pit of need. Left totally overwhelmed and so unsure of which way to go or what to do, I asked God, He said fast for three days, so I did. Three days later I get an e-mail from Kids Alive, asking for our help in rescuing children around the world. I knew - this was it. Within three months I was on a plane to my first trip to Kenya, in which I filmed the music video to "Imagine".
The A21 Campaign is an organization that exists to abolish injustice in the 21st century: preventing trafficking through awareness and education and protecting those who have been trafficked by building shelters and transition homes. I was singing and leading worship at women's conference and heard Christine Cain speak for the first time. The message I heard arrested my heart and it was another divine connection, for within months I was in Greece with the team marching the streets of Thessoloniki causing awareness and spreading information about this atrocity.
10. Person you'd most like to have a discussion with, living or dead.....Deities are excused from this question.
Moses.
Bonus Questions
1. Favorite Bible Verse....life verse.
Ephesians 3:16-21 This is what I sign on everything... It is a Powerful Prayer! It is my hearts desire for me, my family and everyone.
I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God's love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.
2. Funniest or most embarrassing moment on the road?
In the beginning, before we had our rider set up, we showed up to a ticketed event and they only had one speaker in a cafeteria! It was so embarrassing.
3. What artist or pastor has had the greatest impact on you?
My Pastors Dair and Glenda Sutton have been our pastors for 11 years now, they have loved us, taught us, served us, dreamed with us, fought for us, covered us, married us, baptized us, & dedicated our children! They are our spiritual parents all the way! They have the devotion and discipline to get in His presence and He honors them with supernatural wisdom and revelation! They are obedient to Christ and full of humility and strength. Papa Dair and Pastor Sutton pour themselves out to the community, giving to the needy and supplying Hope through God's hands extended. I have watched how God has used them to transform inner city Nashville... They are Heroes, Champions.
