BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Discography
- 2014 - Runway (recording)
- 2016 - God's Not Dead 2 (movie)
1. Brief history/synopsis
I was born in South Bend, Indiana and moved to Florida when I was around 1 year old. I lived in Florida for 7 years, playing basketball at the YMCA, going to church with my family, and went to school for Kindergarten and first grade before I was homeschooled for a few years. In 2004, we moved back to Indiana where I finally went back to school for fourth grade and on. Around 8th grade, I began singing. Music soon became my "job" and have been pursuing a professional career in music for 5 years now. I've been living in Kendallville, Indiana since 2004.
2. What does a normal day at home look like for you?
Well, before I finally completed high school, I would get up in the mornings, do some school and then complete any music tasks I had lined up for that day. I typically have a sit down with my dad or management on Mondays and talk about what needs to completed for each week. So, after I was done with my school for the day, normally around 4-5, I would work on videos, set lists, online projects, planning, organizing, etc. till around 7-10, each night varied. I would then relax for the night, playing video games, watching TV, hanging with friends, or whatever. This is when I'm not touring or on set for the TV show or a film.
3. What's the song that you just can't get out of your head right now?
Unbreakable Smile, by Tori Kelly. The song is just so encouraging and awesome. She talks about how she won't allow others around her, whether that be friends, labels, entertainment industry, haters, etc bring her down because she's too confident in her craft in who she is as a person and doesn't care if someone likes it or not. She's able to talk about her faith and how it guides her life though she's not labeled a "Christian" artist and I admire that.
4. How much do you travel, what are the challenges?
I travel quite often. Depending on the time year, I may be on the road longer than other times, but I'd venture to say I'm typically on the road AT LEAST once every month of the year for something music career related. There are always challenges with traveling, like transporting gear and luggage, but also wanting to be in a fuel efficient vehicle. Eating cheap, but healthy while traveling can be difficult at times as well. And simply, making the long drives necessary to get to each destination can be tough. I enjoy traveling a lot! I love seeing new sceneries, meeting new people, trying new foods, and visiting places I've never been before. But, there are times where I do miss home and my family that can be hard sometimes. Thank goodness for phone calls and skypes while I'm away :)
5. What Artist or Pastor has had the greatest impact on you?
I think my relationship with my management out of Nashville has been a great influence on my development and life as I've grown in my career. Brad Mathias is a pastor who is the president of the label I partnered with early on and he has given amazing guidance and clarity throughout the years that I value greatly. Robert Beeson is my other industry manager that's showed me the ropes in the industry and has given me knowledge about the industry that is priceless. I'm extremely thankful for them.
6. What's the last book you read?
Sadly, I'm not a huge reader. It's just hard for me really get into a book unless it's like a movie of some kind. HA HA. I love science fiction books that get my imagination going. Considering I haven't read any books of late, my favorite book series is the, I AM NUMBER FOUR book series. They made a movie of the first one a few years ago, but it never took off like HUNGER GAMES or TWILIGHT. But, I still loved the book series and continue to read them faithfully as the new ones come out. :p
7. Funniest or most embarrassing moment on the road?
When i was first starting out, I was down in Nashville filming the concert episodes for the TV sitcom iShine Knect that I'm featured in. Well, the goal for filming this concert scene was for the artists to actually lip sync to the track since the editors were going to have the regular song play over what they recorded for the TV series. Well, we had done filming all day with the camera crew on stage along with me, getting close ups and interactive shots of me singing. Then, that night they brought in a live audience. In the live show that night, the TV crew had told the audience we would be lip syncing, but I don't think everyone fully understood. In the middle of my performance, granted this was one of my first times performing while moving around on stage, I dropped my mic in the middle of one of my lines. The crowd instantly stopped clapping and stared at me. They obviously heard my voice continue singing in the track, but I was no longer holding the mic. The editors of course wouldn't use that clip, but due to the lack of clarification, the crowd didn't understand and things were awkward. lol
8. Take us thru a couple songs on your latest project.
My latest album is titled "RUNWAY" and it was released in September of 2014. The title track of the album, "RUNWAY" is receiving radio right now and is probably the most popular track off the album. It's my favorite as well ;) I wrote the song during a time in my life where I was feeling extremely stressed and anxious about what's to come in my career. I still feel this way every so often, so this is still pretty relevant to my situation. But in the song, I talk about simply having that trust and faith in God that he will put you where he wants you in life. The word "runway" plays off a metaphor of getting on the airport runway and riding the plane God pilots. Just like we must trust a pilot to take us to our next destination, we must trust God that he will pilot our lives to the best possible destination. Many people can relate to this and apply it to situations in their own lives. Maybe someone is stressing about colleges or job opportunities. God has a plan for everyone and we gotta be prepared to pack our bags and go.
9. What organization/service group are you affiliated with?
iShine is an organization presenting tweens with a Christian alternative to Disney. They have a TV sitcom, a tour, and are partnered with multiple Christian organizations, helping kids find identity in Christ. RemedyLive, com is another organization I'm partnered with, which helps teens in crisis. They've helped youth struggling with bullying, addiction, suicide attempts, and basically any struggle youth deals with. These organizations have helped many kids around the world and I'm extremely thankful I've been able to partner with them and share my message through both platforms.
10. Person you'd most like to have a discussion with, living or dead.....Deities are excused from this question
I'd love to chat with Lecrae or TobyMac about the industry and hear their hearts on struggles and circumstances they've had to overcome and learn from their experiences. I'd also like to play either one on one in hoops.
Bonus Questions
1. Favorite Bible Verse....life verse?
Phil. 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. This verse is just so encouraging and I know that no matter what frustrations or obstacles that I experience, I can fight through it and be victorious through Christ.
2. How & When did you become a believer?
Growing up, I was always involved in the church with my family, so understanding how to have a relationship with Christ was a little easier. When I was about 11 years old, I finally started to take my own faith more seriously, going on a purity weekend with my parents, and learning more about what it was like to have a personal relationship with Jesus. I was baptized the same year and began developing my faith.
3. What's the biggest "God moment" you've ever experienced? Personally or professionally, when has God shown up in a powerful way?
So far, my biggest moment of faith was giving up athletics for music. My whole life, I had thought sports would be my way to college and what I would pursue in life. Sophomore year of high school came, and I had to make a choice between the two. During the decision making process, I was extremely emotional. I was leaving all I had ever known for something I was pretty new at. It was a serious leap of faith, but to this day, the overwhelming peace and satisfaction of that decision has confirmed I made the right choice. I had prayed and prayed about that decision and I'm thankful God gave me the clarity to make the choices I made.
