Great Moments In Contest Tweaking
It's always fun to see stations that will take what they're doing and make an adjustment to it to reflect something that's big and topical.
A few years ago the teachers in Chicago struck at the beginning of the school year and the parents of 600,000 kids suddenly were stuck with trying to find ways to get sitters or day care or otherwise deal with their kids not going to school.
B-96 was doing this awful $500 contest that involved more than one artist a day and different appointment times and then there was a bonus element. I remember reading the description to a CBS GM and he paused and said "I have no idea what you just explained to me" Listen for Mariah Carey at 9:07 and then Lady Gaga at 11:14 and then Katy Perry at 1:03...you get the idea.
I suggested they suspend the contest until the strike was over and run a promo acknowledging the situation people were having to deal with, and take the money, break it into two $250 winners and ten times a day pay peoples childcare.
As God is my witness, you would have thought I'd suggested putting kittens in a blender.
The US Dollar is at a pretty high point in terms of strength internationally, so K-Rock in St. Johns is switching that K FX contest, round three, to US Dollars. Which will fluctuate every day with the exchange rate. Today instead of winning $1000 Canadian dollars, you'll win $1330.84 US Dollars. Why? Why not?
Amazing Moments In Staff Competitions
Entercom in San Diego is one of those clusters that defies description. They're. Cool.
94/9 is deeply immersed in a battle to own the Coachella position in that market, and Jack Taylor came up with a competition for the talent and promo team.
This is genius.
Hopefully you all received and read Ciro's email from yesterday, generally applauding what a great job we do, and encouraging you to always strive to be the best you can, and not go the path of least resistance.
With all that said, it's going to be another crazy spring/summer concert series coming up, and the shifts, hours, heat, EVERYTHING is about to punch up to the next level, SO, while getting signs, vehicles, and bodies in front of crowded places are going to continue to be an item in our bag of tricks, we're going to try something a little more one-on-one, a little more specific, and (hopefully) a little more fun.
SOOOOOOO: Introducing the FM 94/9 Coachella Scavenger Hunt!
Between now, today, right now and 5:30pm on April 1st there is a pair of weekend two Coachella wristbands and a $100 gas card (and a weekend off the schedule from promo events) that could be yours.
Whaaaaaaat? Hooooowwwwwww? Shut your mouth.
I'm going to roll out scavenger hunt sheets for ALL afternoon caravan shifts in the month of March that will include additional items and tasks, but the main item (and the only stat that matters when it comes to winning the wristbands) is Coachella digital sign-ups. Ciro has added a box on the digital signup sheet that says 'Promo Code'. Anytime you are at an event, on a caravan shift, anywhere, anytime, and you get someone to sign up for the contest using the link I've included below (or by texting 'Coachella' to 61749 and receiving the digital sign up for that way) have them enter your first or last name into this box. At the end of the month, we'll tally up all the sign ups, and the promo person who has gotten the most UNIQUE sign-ups will win the wristbands.
How you go about getting these sign ups is up to you, and your creativity, and is obviously another incentive to sign up for shifts. We will be providing you with iPads and the hotspot for events, and as mentioned, you can always have people text 'Coachella' to 61749 and include your name when they will out the form to get you credit.
A few bullet points:
- UNIQUE sign ups means, don't have your cousin sign up three different times with different email addresses, it's easy to track these things by IP address, and we wouldn't want to disqualify you after all your hard work
- Stick to the message: FM 94/9 has the most chances to wristbands, and you're helping them get that much closer to claiming theirs
- They MUST use the promo code to get you credit. We will not go back and give you credit for your English Lit professor that signed up but forgot to include your name. It HAS to be included when they sign up
- Digital sign up link: http://fm949sd.secondstreetapp.com/Coachella-2016/
- Text 'COACHELLA' to 61749
I'm sending out a separate email that talks a little more about the general scavenger hunt items, but I wanted to get this info out to you all IMMEDIATELY, because... don't look now, but the competition has started.
It's like the Hunger Games, except with a lot less killing, and a lot more Spicy Pie.
Have fun! Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions. May the best man/woman win!
