There's a great article in the February issue of WIRED magazine from Clive Thompson regarding Social Media (pg. 30). What's more important -- having a large social audience or one that's small?
Clive contends (and I agree) that Social Media works better when the group is smaller. A large group of friends and followers are less likely to interact with you. Smaller groups feel more connected, engaged, and believe that what they say and contribute matters to you and to other members in the group.
Radio has spent years collecting share, trying to get as many people as we can to attend events, listen, and pay attention to us. Change your thinking. Read the piece; it's applicable to our industry and the next time someone says you only have 100 followers, or your friends seemed to have peaked out at 300, you can tell them it's a good thing.
