1. What Got You Interested In Radio?
Growing up in San Francisco, I was obsessed with the Morning Zoo on KMEL with the great Bill Lee and Renel. Also, Mancow on Wild 107 (Now 94.9) I thought, yup I wanna do at that!
2. What makes the market unique? How does this compare to other markets or stations you have worked at?
Santa Rosa is really unique. We're less than an hour away from San Francisco. Many of those station bleed into our market, so by default we are competing with them. I like it though; it keeps us on our toes. Plus, we get the fun of the Bay Area, yet we are in Wine/BEER country!
3. What do you view as the most important issue facing radio today?
Evolution. Radio is not dead, but it's evolving. Digital & Social are so important now. Yet you can't forget the fact that radio is still really the only local medium that touches people's lives. On a personal level, when someone comes up to me and says that something on my show made them laugh or think, it's the BEST feeling.
4. How are you using social media to market your radio station and your show?
Interaction is huge. Social media allows us to interact when we're not on the air, which then in turn keeps us top of mind when your show is back on the radio.
5. What is the biggest change that you'd like to see happen in the business?
Get back to doing radio for listeners, for the passion of the art of entertaining radio and not to please bankers.
7. What advice would you give people new to the business?
One of my favorite things to do is mentor up and comers. You should learn EVERYTHING you can. Programming, on-air, production, digital, even sales. A lot of younger folks come in with expectations and entitlement. Gotta squash that right away. Make them work. NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!
8. Tell us what music we would find on your playlist right now and what is it you enjoy about that particular selection?
I work on a Hot AC and classic rock but you at my playlist it's classic hip hop! :D It reminds me of High School.
9. What's the closest you ever came to getting arrested for an on-air stunt? Or did you actually get arrested?
When I did mornings in El Paso, I had my interns moon cars in honor of the anniversary of the Moon Landing. The cops came ... there were some questions. ... and maybe some background checks. Ha! Ha!
10. What is the one truth that has held constant in your career?
You get what you put into it. This is true for most anything in life.
Bonus Questions
What do you do in your spare time?
I have two kids (8 & 4) so no spare time really. But, IF I do, I love riding my bike around Sonoma County or spending time drinking a beer with friends.
Do you have any good stalker stories? Misty requests? "Fatal Attractions?"
I had a listener send me one of her earrings once... and a long love letter. :/
