Perfect For Bad Hair Days, We Can Now Do Audio-Only Content On Twitter
September 11, 2018
-
As Twitter puts it, "Sometimes we just want to talk, without being on the camera."
So Twitter (+ Periscope) is the latest to jump into the audio space with a new feature allowing us to create spoken-word only content.
Here's how it works.
When you begin a tweet, tap "Live" then choose the "audio-only" option by tapping the microphone; tap "Go Live," and you're on.
But before jumping into this new feature, make sure what we're doing is meaningful for the end user.
Having an overall idea for your audio helps the audience understand (and remember) what you're about.
Building content disciplines is what's required in order to earn space in today's limited bandwidth.
Create Concepts
- Live Podcasting
Maybe it's producing an audio series (mini-live podcasts?) or using Twitter audio to tease established podcasts.
- Trending Topics
Pay attention to what people are talking about and fire up a live audio stream around a topic. You'll be able to see who joins you, and acknowledge their opinions.
- Q&As
When celebrities, artists (local or national), anyone interesting visits - share your access virtually by taking their questions. This is great for places with weak wi-fi; where live video won't work.
- Breaking News
When news affects us - keep everyone informed.
- Behind The Scenes
Allow people to "peek in" to hear what's happening. Or have people guess the "voice you're with."
- Product/Hobby Demo
Narrate how to do something. What do you love doing?
- Stories Reinforcing Community
Find those who go out of their way to give back - showcase them in an audio series.
- Disappearing Doodles
Not even sure what to do with this feature but you can "sketch" on the audio. Only the sketching disappears as fast as you draw - so we'll have to think on this.
Reach Execution
Create an alluring (& accurate) title.
The live audio tweet immediately goes into News Feed so ask people ahead of time to retweet it.
Use functions within the broadcast where you can ask folks who are watching to share it; plus you can share the broadcast via your personal text or email as well as re-share on Twitter, LinkedIn, etc...
Send email to the larger brand database before you go live.
Collect future audio ideas from the audience.
Twitter audio also offers metrics like number of live listens and other stats to template success or pivot for optimization.
Pay attention to data. It should be teaching us how to be even better.
Great brands are anchored on experiences that keep connection alive.
With Twitter in the audio space; use it to complement what drives people to interact with you in the first place.
The feature is slowing rolling out for iOS users only. Android to follow.
