The life of six-time Grammy Award winner and superstar WHITNEY HOUSTON, who passed away last week (NET NEWS 2/11), was celebrated in grand and very public fashion with music, words, and tears (2/18) at a "Homegoing," held at the NEW HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH in NEWARK, where HOUSTON got her musical start in the church choir.
WHITNEY was honored by many in entertainment including mentor CLIVE DAVIS, mother CISSY HOUSTON, daughter BOBBI KRISTINA, cousin DIONNE WARWICK, sister-in law and manager PATRICIA HOUSTON, ex-husband BOBBY BROWN (who reportedly left abruptly), STEVIE WONDER, R. KELLY, ALICIA KEYS, MARY J. BLIGE, RAY J, QUEEN LATIFAH, RICKEY MINOR, BEBE WINANS, KIM BURRELL, DONNIE McCLURKIN, BRANDY, STAR JONES, VIVICA FOX, FOREST WHITAKER, Rev JESSE JACKSON, "Bodyguard" co-star KEVIN COSTNER, director TYLER PERRY and so many more crowded the church to capacity.
There were performances by STEVIE WONDER, R. KELLY, ALICIA KEYS, KIM BURRELL, BEBE WINANS, DONNIE McCLURKIN, CECE WINANS, CARVIN WINANS, MARVIN WINANS and more. ARETHA FRANKLIN, who was set to sing "The Greatest Love of All," was ill and did not perform.
The NEW HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH MASS CHOIR and the NEW JERSEY MASS CHOIR opened the service, while Pastor MARVIN WINANS delivered the eulogy. Bishop T.D. JAKES delivered remarks along with touching words by TYLER PERRY, KEVIN COSTNER, CLIVE DAVIS, her real life body guard RAY WATSON, DIONNE WARWICK, CECE WINANS, RICKEY MINOR.
The service concluded with a stirring sermon by MARVIN WINANS leading those present in singing "Let The Church Say Amen", followed by a recording of WHITNEY HOUSTON singing "I Will Always Love You" as her casket was wheeled out of the church.
Following the "Homegoing Service" at NEW HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH, WHITNEY's family and her closest friends gathered for a private funeral.
