One of the first DJs of pirate RADIO CAROLINE, TOM LODGE, has died aged 75, the LONDON TELEGRAPH reported. LODGE, who the pirate station that sailed around ENGLAND, joined RADIO CAROLINE in APRIL 1964, had a looser, more spontaneous, American-influenced on-air style.
After being named PD Lodge junked the tight programming format and hired DJs who were "young, enthusiastic, positive, friendly [and] lived and breathed the music scene." Ordered not to prepare for their shows, the new jocks were told to collect the records that they might want to play, and place them all around the studio, choosigg teh next record while the current one was still playing. LODGE believed that choosing records that way forced the air talent "to be spontaneous and feel their show."
