THE BOSTON PHOENIX is reporting that its parent company PHOENIX MEDIA is selling Alternative WFNX/BOSTON to CLEAR CHANNEL. No price has been disclosed.
A memo from owner STEPHEN M. MINDICH posted at THE BOSTON PHOENIX website says that "Despite its celebrated history, its cutting edge programming , its tradition of breaking new music, its ardent fans among listeners and advertisers, for some time it has been difficult to sustain the station -- especially since the start of the Great Recession.
"And that is why the station is being sold."
According to BOSTON.com, 17 of the 21 WFNX employees have been laid off TODAY including long-time News Director and morning show co-host HENRY SANTORO and middayer JULIE KRAMER.
WFNX PD PAUL DRISCOLL hit the airwaves at 5p (ET) to thank listeners for all your support. He indicated that the station will still be around for at least two months and will go out loud and proud."
