CRTC Says No To CHQR Bid For FM Transmitter, OKs Two New Calgary FMs

The CRTC has denied CORUS' application to add an FM simulcast for Talk CHQR-A (QR 77)/CALGARY. The company proposed adding a transmitter at 106.9 FM with 1,000 watts, but the CRTC said that it would not make an exception to ownership caps to allow the new transmitter, asserting that "the additional FM presence that would result from the CORUS proposal would undermine the Common Ownership Policy by adversely affecting competitive balance and diversity in the CALGARY market."
But the agency did approve two new FMs for CALGARY, one for MULTICULTURAL BROADCASTING CORP. INC. for an Ethnic station with 8,000 watts at 106.7 FM and the other for JIM PARRISON BROADCAST GROUP for a new Triple A FM with 100,000 watts at 95.3 FM.
