Bell Plans Flip Of TSN Radio 990/Montreal To French Sports, Habs Headed Back To CJAD

BELL MEDIA has applied to the CRTC to change the format of its Sports CKGM-A (TSN RADIO 990)/MONTREAL to French Sports as RDS RADIO 990 in a move that will return MONTREAL CANADIENS English-language hockey broadcasts to the HABS' former longtime radio home, crosstown ASTRAL MEDIA Talk CJAD-A, after a year's absence.
The moves are the result of competitive restrictions governing BELL's pending acquisition of ASTRAL; before that deal, BELL had planned to move the CKGM format to 690 AM, the former RADIO-CANADA PREMIERE CHAINE affiliate CBF-A (now on FM), and the new RDS format is likely to make the move to 690 instead. BELL owns both TSN and RDS, English-language and French-language cable TV sports networks, respectively.
"With RDS RADIO 990, we're presented with a formidable opportunity to enhance and extend the RDS brand by delivering best-in-class sports content and coverage across another platform to our fans," said RDS President GERRY FRAPPIER. "For the past 23 years, RDS has set the benchmark for French-language sports broadcasting in CANADA, and we look forward to raising the bar even higher now with RDS RADIO 990."
"Powered by the strength of the RDS brand and its exceptional roster of on-air personalities, RDS RADIO 990 is a natural and logical fit for francophone fans in the MONTREAL market," said President, Radio and Local TV CHRIS GORDON. "We're excited to make an impact on the MONTREAL sports scene and engage listeners with the local stories and athletic coverage that matter to them the most."
