The MAYHEM FESTIVAL, held SUNDAY, JULY 22nd at DTE ENERGY MUSIC THEATRE in DETROIT, strengthened its "DETROIT Rock City" connotation just a little bit further. The venue was filled to capacity with approximately 15,000 rock ‘n’ rollers and metal heads, as well as GREATER MEDIA Active Rock WRIF/DETROIT and its 2012 RIFF Rock Girl JULIET, who celebrated her birthday in style.
JOSE MANGIN of SIRIUSXM Radio’s Liquid Metal and OZZY’s Boneyard revved up the mob at the JAGERMEISTER Stage, particularly during ANTHRAX’s set. Other bands that took the stage were WHITE CHAPEL, ASKING ALEXANDRIA, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA and more.
Main stage headliners were AS I LAY DYING, MOTÖRHEAD, SLAYER and SLIPKNOT. Among the many highlights were LEMMY KILMISTER kicking off the band's set with the signature line, "We are MOTÖRHEAD, and we play rock ‘n’ roll!" which ignited the crowd, along with the band's classic, "Ace of Spades." SLAYER had both the pavilion and the hill of DTE Energy Music Theatre completely packed, using plenty of fire and wild pyrotechnics to create intense visual effects.
SLIPKNOT’s closing performance tied the perfect knot to finish off MAYHEM FESTIVAL. The staging, lighting, special effects, and overall theatrics of the band’s set created a one-of-a-kind show that left the crowd in awe. Drummer JOEY JORDISON played on a revolving drum set that not only turned in a circle, but also flipped from horizontal to vertical. Liquid nitrogen blasts, more fire, and a confetti shower accompanied the band.
MAYHEM FESTIVAL 2012 unleashed a serious amount of mayhem upon DETROIT, and the same is anticipated for next year.
