LOCAL MEDIA SAN DIEGO Alternative XTRA-F (91X) launched support for the “MOVEMBER” campaign TODAY, activating a number of programs to draw attention and raise funds towards men’s health issues. Men participating in “MOVEMBER” spend the month of NOVEMBER growing mustaches to raise awareness, and can share photos and compare mustache growth progress on movember.com. 91X’s STEVE WEST, who has been on-air with the station since its inception in 1983, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2004, and is an outspoken advocate for testing and prevention. To help kick off the campaign, STEVE will spend 49 hours in the studio to host the “91X MOVEMBER MARATHON BROADCAST,” starting FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2nd at 7p until SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4th at 7p. The extra hour comes from daylight savings time early SUNDAY morning, which sets clocks back an hour.
While broadcasting over the weekend, 91X will host live on-air auctions of dozens of exclusive rock memorabilia and experiences, with all funds going to the PROSTATE CANCER FOUNDATION. Items vary from signed guitars by THE BLACK KEYS and BUSH, a hand-painted tambourine from GROUPLOVE, posters, vinyl albums, and items signed by artists including the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, MUSE, COLDPLAY, and METALLICA. A complete list of auction items and schedule is available at 91x.com.
"“I have been inspired by the amount of exposure the battle against breast cancer gets, and yet prostate cancer affects more men then breast cancer does to women,” said WEST. “I decided to do what I can to get my message across, and the MOVEMBER campaign has done a terrific job of also getting the word out. It’s simple: prostate cancer is treatable if caught early, but there are no symptoms. Visit your doctor, and get tested."
"I’m so proud of STEVE and all the 91X staff for their dedication to this cause,” added 91X PD CHRISTY TAYLOR. “It’s shocking to realize how many men in our lives are affected by prostate cancer, and we are going to do everything we can to get the message out."
In addition to the marathon broadcast, the 91X/SANUK TOUR BUS has also “grown” a mustache and will “visit every neighborhood in SAN DIEGO,” over the month to share the message. A fundraising party is scheduled for WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28th at THE COMMONS bar in downtown SAN DIEGO.
