Ryan Haney's Move To Birmingham's Zone Draws Suit From WJOX

PD RYAN HANEY's move from CUMULUS Sports WJOX/BIRMINGHAM to crosstown COX MEDIA GROUP Sports WZNN (97.3 THE ZONE) has drawn a lawsuit from CUMULUS (through subsidiary CITADEL BROADCASTING CO.), reports the BIRMINGHAM NEWS.
HANEY's contract expired on DECEMBER 21st, 2010, but WJOX contends that as an at-will employee, the terms of his contract continued, including a one-year noncompete clause. CUMULUS/CITADEL is suing HANEY for breach of contract and seeking a restraining order preventing HANEY from working for another station within 60 miles of the WJOX transmitter for one year. A hearing has been scheduled for TODAY at 10a (CT) in U.S. District Court.
HANEY's JANUARY 21st move came at the same time as longtime afternoon host PAUL FINEBAUM's exit from WJOX as his contract expired. FINEBAUM is sitting out a three-month noncompete and speculation about his future has centered on a move to WZNN; his attempts to extricate himself from his contract with CITADEL resulted in protracted litigation, countersuits, and a JULY 2012 settlement.
