Boston: Who Needs Christmas Music?
While the holiday buzz may have propelled GREATER MEDIA AC WMJX (MAGIC) to lofty heights, the lack of said product had little effect on the station’s ranking. The loss of audience was predictable (11.8-7.9), but MAGIC was still the #1 overall station. Last year it had slipped to #2 with a puny 7.1 share. CCM+E Top 40/M WXKS (KISS 108) did not return to its accustomed position atop the leader board as the station scored its lowest number in over a year (7.6-7.3), which was over two shares below last year’s total (9.6). Speaking of last year, at that point GREATER MEDIA Classic Hits WROR was mired at #10 with a 4.3 share. More recently, the station matched its best book of the last year (5.2-6.3) and climbed from #5 to #3. Cluster cousin GREATER MEDIA Country WKLB rebounded from its poorest outing of the last year (5.3-5.9) to remain at #4. Meanwhile, CBS RADIO Classic Rock WZLX had a solid showing (5.4-5.8), yet slipped a couple of places to #5. The PATRIOTS may have ended their season a bit prematurely but the team had a positive effect on the Sports radio landscape. CBS RADIO Sports WBZ-F (THE SPORTS HUB) had its best book in over a year (4.6-5.4) to land at #7 while ENTERCOM Sports WEEI-F had a strong outing (2.7-3.5) to move up to #11.
Take that, SANTA! Even though WXKS posted its fifth consecutive down book, the station did return to its full and upright position at #1 25-54. WMJX was down from #1 to #2 though it has a much heftier share than at this point a year ago. The news was better for WKLB as it bounced back from a poor HOLIDAY book to remain at #3 while WBZ-F scored its best book in a year to hold steady at #4. Speaking of "best of’s," WROR had its best book in over a year and gained traction, moving from #7 to #5.
All is calm and bright in the 18-34 universe as WXKS continued its uninterrupted run at #1 even though the station suffered its third down book in a row. CCM+E Top 40/R WJMN (JAM’N) was also down for the third consecutive survey yet still held firmly to its strong #2 position. By posting its best book since MAY, GREATER MEDIA Alternative WBOS (RADIO 92.9) moved up a slot to #3. The withering effect of a jingle-bell-free playlist caused WMJX to slip one place to #4 -- a much better place to be than the tie at #6 last year. WKLB held firm at #5, bouncing back from its lowest number of the year.
The top five stations 18-49 remained unchanged with only a minor amount of shuffling. WXKS was tagged with its lowest number in over a year yet still returned to its usual place at #1. As expected, WMJX experienced a dizzying loss of audience and fell to #2 -- far better and bigger than last year’s tie at #4. WJMN also had its lowest book in over a year but maintained its #3 position. WKLB was up but stable at #4 while WBZ-F had its best book since last JANUARY to remain at #5.
Detroit: CBS Rules
The CBS cluster has quite a bit to brag about as it now owns the top three positions in the MOTOR CITY. CBS RADIO News WWJ-A had a huge book, its best in over a year (7.0-8.3), to move up from #2. Cluster companion CBS RADIO Classic Hits WOMC also scored its biggest number in over a year to leap from a tie at #5 to #2. Not to be outdone, CBS RADIO Country WYCD bounced back from its lowest number in over a year (5.9-6.3) to move up a slot to #3. Putting the "hot" in Hot AC, CUMULUS Hot AC WDVD earned its best rating in over a year to move from a tie at #5 to #4. Meanwhile, CCM+E Urban AC WMXD (MIX) reversed a two-book slide by matching its best book of the last year (4.4-5.4) to jump from #8 to #5. This was one of the markets that had head-to-head Christmas stations. The format "winner" was CCM+E AC WNIC (FRESH). It plunged (10.2-4.7) from #1 to #7 ,but was in better shape than the previous year when it was in a tie at #12 with a 3.7. The other holiday competitor, GREATER MEDIA AC WMGC (TODAY’S 105.1), took a steeper dive (6.4-3.6) as it fell from #3 to #14. Last year, it was in the exact same position with the exact same number as WNIC.
Ladies and gentlemen, let us introduce to you the new #1 station 25-54: WDVD. The station had a monster book and is over two-and-a-half shares bulkier than it was a year ago. WYCD also had a strong showing and moved from #4 to #2. CBS RADIO Sports WXYT-F (THE TICKET) matched its lowest book of the last year to slip a slot to #3. WMXD had a very strong effort and jumped from a tie at #8 to a tie at #4 with GREATER MEDIA Active Rock WRIF, which moved up from #7. Those CHRISTMAS guys fell like snow from a roof. WNIC went from #1 to #9 (compared to #13 last year) while WMGC went from #5 to #17 (compared to a tie at #16 a year ago).
Major events were unfolding in 18-34 as there was a tie atop the leader board. CCM+E Urban AC WJLB and WDVD both scored huge numbers -- their best in over a year. Meanwhile, WGPR INC Urban AC WGPR had its best book since MAY to move up a slot to #3. CCM+E Top 40/M WKQI (CHANNEL 955) had its best outing in over a year to climb up one to #4. Bouncing back from its poorest book since APRIL, WYCD edged up a notch to #5. The holiday twins performed their expected death-defying dives as WNIC went from #1 to #6 (#9 last year) and WMGC went from #9 to a tie at #18 (a tie at #15 last year).
The WDVD road show continued 18-49 as the station had another "best" book to move up to #1 with a number that is almost three shares heavier than the one it owned a year ago. WJLB was up for the fourth straight book and inched up one slot to #2. WYCD was also up one to #3 while cluster bro’ WXYT-F moved up the ladder one rung to #4. Returning to the top 5 for the first time since JUNE, WGPR improved its ranking by one entire position. The Yule dudes were moving in the opposite direction. WNIC dropped from #1 to #7 (a tie at #10 last year) while WMGC tumbled from #8 to #18 (#17 last year).
Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood: Seven In A Row
For the seventh month in a row, the COX RADIO cluster owned the top two spots as COX RADIO Urban AC WHQT (HOT) remained at #1 (9.3-9.2) while its cluster roomie COX RADIO Urban WEDR kept its hold on #2 (6.9-6.8). Residing at the #3 position for the seventh straight book, was UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary WAMR (AMOR), which posted its lowest book since MAY (6.2-5.6). Holding steady at #4 for -- you guessed it -- the seventh consecutive survey -- was COX RADIO AC WFEZ (EASY) (6.0-5.4). A year ago, CCM+E Spanish Contemporary WMGE (MEGA) was stuck in a tie at #12, but after posting its best number since JUNE (4.4-5.0), it is now at #5, up from #8.
After taking a brief vacation from being #1 25-54, WHQT returned to the top spot by just edging out cluster-mate WEDR, which did post its best book in over a year. WMGE is on a (mostly) five-book tear and jumps from a tie at #5 to #3. This caused BEASLEY Top 40/R WPOW (POWER) to slip a notch and fall into a tie at #4 with CCM+E Top 40/M WHYI (Y100), which jumped up from #7.
18-34 is WEDR’s domain and the station continued its dominance as it had almost a four-share lead over new #2 WPOW, which had its best book since FEBRUARY. WHYI had a solid performance yet slipped a slot to #3 while WMGE had its best showing since JUNE to remain at #4. WHQT was down for the third straight book but remained at #5.
WEDR continued to own 18-49 as it posted its best book in over a year. WHYI had its best number since APRIL to move up to #2 but it trails WEDR by three full shares. WPOW was essentially flat but slipped a slot to #3 while WMGE scored its highest number in over a year to take over sole possession of #4. WHQT was flat and slipped from a tie at #4 to #5.
