As ALL ACCESS reported earlier this month (NET NEWS 4/10), COX MEDIA GROUP's longtime Rocker WFYV (ROCK 104.5)/JACKSONVILLE has "retired" the Rock format.
CMG/JACKSONVILLE OM TODD SHANNON had told ALL ACCESS "After 33 years in the Rock format, WFYV will retire on APRIL 28th at the conclusion of its annual concert 'WELCOME TO ROCKVILLE.' While we are sad to say goodbye to ROCK 104-5, we have tremendous brand awareness and equity in our sister rock property, JACKSONVILLE’s NEW ROCK ALTERNATIVE X102.9. We have already folded the best assets of WFYV (music, concerts, etc.) into WXXJ and look forward to serving our listeners with one, super-rock brand, X102-9."
ALL ACCESS ears in JACKSONVILLE heard the change, as of 10:08p ET SUNDAY. During the final song performed by LYNYRD SKYNYRD at the "Welcome to Rockville" festival. The SKYNYRD classic "Free Bird" aired at 9:54p and, at its conclusion, a short period of dead air began. When audio returned, WFYV listeners were welcomed to, in succession, "RAW TALK 104.5 THE BONE", "EASY 104.5", "104.5 BRAD-FM", "POWER 104.5" and "CALIENTE 104.5" with an announcement that "ROCK 104.5 is officially retired," while inviting listeners to tune to their sister station X-102.9. The five-minute loop has been airing for over seven hours and continues as of this morning.
