The impact of company-wide layoffs at ESPN on ESPN RADIO and ESPN AUDIO are thus far unclear, but the cuts reported by DEADSPIN of an unknown number of employees likely numbering in the hundreds have been concentrated in the early stages among the company's sales and technology departments.
The DEADSPIN report noted that the company has been experiencing large profits and parent DISNEY's stock recently hit a record high, but that DISNEY has been asking all of its divisions to cut expenses and meet profit margin goals. ESPN also quietly exited the U.K. with the sale of its operations there to BT, which is launching BT SPORT 1 and BT SPORT 2 in the FALL and will operate at least one ESPN-branded channel.
