WYCD Turns 20 With Hoedown Throwdown
May 29, 2013 at 10:19 AM (PT)
Congratulations to CBS RADIO Country WYCD/DETROIT, which marked its 20th anniversary YESTERDAY (5/28).
In 1993, then-owner ALLIANCE flipped NEWS/TALK WOW-FM to YOUNG COUNTRY, just it had previously done with properties in DALLAS, SEATTLE and SAN FRANCISCO. The YOUNG COUNTRY brand combined elements of Talk radio in its presentation with a heavy emphasis on listener phone calls. WOW afternoon personality DR. DON CARPENTER made the flip and with the exception of a short stint at Country WUBE/CINCINATTI, has been a fixture in WYCD mornings. In FEBRUARY, CARPENTER was inducted into the COUNTRY RADIO HALL OF FAME (NET NEWS 10/3).
WYCD shed the YOUNG COUNTRY moniker in 2001 and has remained a consistent ratings leader in DETROIT, most recently improving 6.3-6.5 (P 6+) in the APRIL PPM ratings. Asked how the station celebrated, PD TIM ROBERTS told ALL ACCESS, “We didn’t do anything in particular, as we are focused on The DOWNTOWN HOEDOWN this week.” The 2013 HOEDOWN takes place FRIDAY-SUNDAY (5/31-6/2), boasting 19 major acts in three days including JAKE OWEN, CRAIG MORGAN, UNCLE KRACKER, JOE NICHOLS, PHIL VASSAR, CHARLIE WORSHAM and others.
A 31-year DETROIT institution, the HOEDOWN has been presented by ‘YCD since 2000. Originally held in DETROIT’s downtown HART PLAZA, ‘YCD last year moved the event to COMERICA PARK, home of the DETROIT TIGERS, in order to accommodate a bigger crowd. Check out details on WYCD’s site here. Send PD TIM ROBERTS congratulations here.
