WEDNESDAY night’s (5/29) “HEALING IN THE HEARTLAND” benefit concert for OKLAHOMA tornado victims led NBC-TV to a 1.9 rating among viewers 18-49, the network’s best time period performance since JANUARY. The BLAKE SHELTON-hosted concert garnered 8.56 million viewers in its time slot, outpacing ABC-TV’s “MODERN FAMILY,” which posted a 1.4 share and 4.64 million viewers, according to ZAP2IT. The show was also aired live by STYLE, E!, G4, BRAVO and CMT stations.
The star-studded fundraiser originated from the CHESAPEAKE ENERGY ARENA in OKLAHOMA CITY and was a one-hour, emotion-filled concert that saw MIRANDA LAMBERT overcome with tears during her performance of “The House That Built Me.” LAMBERT choked up during one verse, holding out her microphone so fans in the audience could complete it. VINCE GILL delivered a sensitive, acoustic rendition of “Threaten Me With Heaven,” which he dedicated to, “The 24 people who didn’t make it.”
If FACEBOOK commentary was any indication, tears were flowing nationwide the entire evening, but perhaps none more than when BLAKE SHELTON brought ALYSON COSTILLA onstage. COSTILLA’s mother was killed in the MAY 20th storm and buried one day before ALYSON’s high school graduation.
Additional performances included RASCAL FLATTS (“I Won’t Let Go”), REBA (“Everyday People”) and DARIUS RUCKER (“True Believers”). CARRIE UNDERWOOD sent a taped message as did JAY LENO, JIMMY FALLON and GARTH BROOKS with TRISHA YEARWOOD.
The evening ended with yet another emotional note, as SHELTON performed “Home” and was joined onstage by fellow “THE VOICE” judge USHER. No details on money raised have been released so far.
