As the 2013 chart year reaches the halfway point, MEDIABASE has released the "Midyear Chart Share Report." The comprehensive label performance review utilizes MEDIABASE’s spin-based methodology to rank each record company by percentage of chart share, both overall and by format, including Top 40, Rhythmic, Urban, Urban AC, AC, Hot AC, Active Rock, Mainstream Rock, Alternative and Triple A.
As of the MAY 26th, published charts in MEDIABASE, RCA RECORDS leads the overall chart share with a 17.0% market share. Fueling RCA to win the overall crown is a #1 showing at the Top 40 format, a powerful area of MEDIABASE due to its total number of stations (171), and therefore, large volume of spins. RCA tops the format with 18.9% chart share. Driving the Top 40 win for RCA were several hot releases this year from JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, P!NK, PITBULL, KE$HA and KELLY CLARKSON. RCA also posts a #1 ranking at Urban AC, where they have a 36.2% of the market share. RCA ranks 2nd at Rhythmic, Urban, AC, Hot AC, and 3rd at Rock.
INTERSCOPE/GEFFEN/A&M is #2 overall and at Top 40, and ranks #1 in three individual formats -- Mainstream AC, Hot AC, and Triple A. Their overall chart share is 13.6%. Helping drive INTERSCOPE’s performance is the multi-format success of MAROON 5, as well as the success of newcomers IMAGINE DRAGONS. In addition, 2012 AMERICAN IDOL champion PHILLIP PHILLIPS has charted at multiple formats. Plus, the year’s likely biggest new hip-hop artist KENDRICK LAMAR has had three #1 songs at Urban and those same songs have been top 10 at Rhythmic.
In 3rd place is ISLAND DEF JAM with a 12.7% market share. They score the top chart share at Rhythmic and Urban, while also ranking 3rd at Top 40. Multiple hit songs by RIHANNA have been key to the ISLAND DEF JAM success, along with 2 CHAINZ, KANYE WEST and NE-YO.
REPUBLIC is in 4th place overall at 11.8%. REPUBLIC has succeeded with a very broad-based roster that includes TAYLOR SWIFT, DRAKE, VOLBEAT, OF MONSTERS AND MEN and LIL WAYNE. They also recently took FLORIDA-GEORGIA LINE and crossed them from Country to Top 40 and Hot AC. REPUBLIC is top 5 at every format except Urban AC -- where they rank 6th .
ATLANTIC RECORDS lands top 5 positions at six different formats, including Top 40, Rhythmic, and Urban (part of a combined Urban unit with WARNER BROS. and ROADRUNNER). ATLANTIC is led by multi-format star BRUNO MARS; ED SHEERAN, WALE, SHINEDOWN and newcomer ICONA POP were also strong contributors.
WARNER BROS. RECORDS has been growing as the year progresses. The label remains #1 at Active Rock and Alternative thanks to the likes of MUSE, DEVICE and ATLAS GENIUS. They also had one of the year’s breakthrough acts with MACKLEMORE, who went to #1 at Top 40 and Rhythmic with his first two singles.
COLUMBIA came in 7th place, narrowly behind WARNER BROS. COLUMBIA has also seen their share grow as the year progresses and has developing new acts with OLLY MURS and KREWELLA scoring hits alongside CALVIN HARRIS, J. COLE and TRAIN.
CAPITOL sits in 8th place, fueled by relative newcomers EMELI SANDE, SERENA RYDER and CAPITAL CITIES, along with the first big radio hit for SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA.
ROADRUNNER rolls into 9th place, led heavily by GRAMMY AWARD winners FUN. ROADRUNNER has also seen success with rock stalwarts STONE SOUR.
Rounding out the top 10 is EPIC -- a label that took newcomer JONN HART to #1 at Rhythmic. They’ve also seen early results in the returns of CIARA, AVRIL LAVIGNE and SEAN KINGSTON.
MEDIABASE will finalize the 2013 chart year the week after THANKSGIVING. The results are released in early DECEMBER.
