West Virginia Radio Corp. Sues Over WVU Sports Deal
June 21, 2013 at 5:26 AM (PT)
After pulling out of the bidding for WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY's 12-year athletics multimedia contract and calling for the original contract winner, IMG COLLEGE, to be disqualified because of the participation of two members of the school's board who had ties to a subcontractor working with IMG, and Athletic Dir. OLIVER LUCK providing those board members confidential details of the contract, JOHN RAESE's WEST VIRGINIA RADIO CORP. has now filed suit against the school, LUCK, and alleged IMG subcontractor WEST VIRGINIA MEDIA HOLDINGS.
The CHARLESTON DAILY MAIL reports that the suit alleges that WVU Board of Governors Chairman DREW PAYNE, LUCK, and others used their positions to obtain contracts that benefited themselves in contravention of state law. It also alleges that the WVU FOUNDATION illegally invested in WEST VIRGINIA MEDIA HOLDINGS and lost more than $5 million in the process. RAESE pledges in the suit to donate whatever money he wins (less attorney's fees) in the suit to the WVU CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL.
IMG, WEST VIRGINIA RADIO GROUP, NELLIGAN SPORTS MARKETING, LEARFIELD COMMUNICATIONS, and FOX RUN GROUP were the parties participating in a pre-bidding conference call in MAY. A decision is set to be made AUGUST 5th and announced on AUGUST 23rd. MOUNTAINEER SPORTS NETWORK, owned by the college and working with WEST VIRGINIA RADIO CORP., currently holds the rights.
