A man has been arrested and charged with the murder of former CALGARY radio sportscaster BILLY POWERS and his wife DONNA LEE on THURSDAY (7/4). The CANADIAN PRESS reports that DEREK PUFFER, 35, son of DONNA LEE POWERS and stepson of BILLY POWERS, has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the case after the POWERS were found dead in their home in CALGARY. The police say they were called to the scene with a report of a naked man on the roadside and after speaking with him, arrested him for the crime.
POWERS worked for Top 40 CKXL-A (now CJAQ-F)/CALGARY in 1968-1987 and CORUS Talk CHQR-A/CALGARY from 1989 through his 2009 retirement, most prominently hosting the pre-game, half-time, and postgame shows for CALGARY STAMPEDERS football; he also worked for the STAMPEDERS in media relations and more recently wrote a column for the weekly COCHRANE EAGLE (he began his career as a reporter for the EDMONTON JOURNAL).
“BILL was a larger-than-life person who brought laughter to everyone around him,” said STAMPEDERS president GORDON NORRIE. “He was an engaged Calgarian in terms of the community and a valuable and contributing member of the STAMPEDER Football Club. BILL and DONNA LEE will be missed.”
