Sinclair Buys Allbritton TV Stations
In a television deal by a company making its return to radio, SINCLAIR BROADCAST GROUP is buying the ALLBRITTON television stations for $985 million. The stations include seven ABC affiliates -- WJLA-TV/WASHINGTON, the trimulcast of WBMA-LD/BIRMINGHAM-WCFT-TV/TUSCALOOSA-WJSU-TV/ANNISTON (ALABAMA'S 33/40), WHTM-TV/HARRISBURG, KATV/LITTLE ROCK, KTUL-TV/TULSA, WSET-TV/LYNCHBURG-ROANOKE, and WCIV-TV/CHARLESTON -- plus the NEWSCHANNEL 8 cable service in WASHINGTON. SINCLAIR is in the process of buying the FISHER TV and radio stations. ALLBRITTON will continue to own and operate POLITICO.
SINCLAIR plans to spin its MY NETWORK TV affiliate WABM-TV and CW affiliate WTTO-TV/BIRMINGHAM, CBS affiliate WHP-TV/HARRISBURG, and MY NETWORK TV affiliate WMMP-TV/CHARLESTON, SC to a separate company and then provide sales and other non-programming support services to those stations under shared services agreements and JSAs, as the company does in several other markets. The releases from both companies do not address the overlap between ALLBRITTON's WJLA and SINCLAIR's flagship FOX affiliate WBFF-TV (FOX 45)/BALTIMORE and two other stations with which SINCLAIR has sales agreements, CUNNINGHAM BROADCASTING CW affilate WNUV-TV/BALTIMORE and DEERFIELD MEDIA MY NETWORK TV affiliate WUTB-TV (MY TV)/BALTIMORE.
