Townsquare, FCC Reach Consent Decree Over Sponsorship ID Violations In El Paso

TOWNSQUARE MEDIA and the FCC's Enforcement Bureau have agreed to a Consent Decree to settle alleged violations of sponsorship disclosure rules by TOWNSQUARE's predecessor licensee REGENT BROADCASTING OF EL PASO, INC. (Debtor-in-Possession) at Active Rock KLAQ and Sports KROD-A (SPORTS 600 ESPN)/EL PASO. TOWNSQUARE will pay a $15,000 "voluntary contribution" to the U.S. Treasury and institute a three-year compliance plan to close the matter.
The ads in question were sponsored by THE CIGARETTE OUTLET, the name of which was omitted from the spots, as was the word "cigarette," in order, a complaint filed with the FCC alleged, to circumvent the ban on cigarette advertising. REGENT had argued that the name of the sponsor was irrelevant because of the inclusion of the address and phone number of the sponsor in the ads.
