CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY Contemporary Christian WAYK (88.3)/KALAMAZOO and WAYG (89.9)/GRAND RAPIDS will silence their CHR WAYFM format on 11-29, and begin simulcasting WCSG (91.3)/GRAND RAPIDS.
Exec. Dir./CHRIS LEMKE explains, "Almost 17 years ago, CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY RADIO (owners of WCSG, MISSION NETWORK NEWS & HIS KIDS RADIO) launched a new radio format designed to be uniquely focused on the listening likes of teens and young adults. WAYK, also known as WAYFM, was born. Two years later the station was replicated to cover GRAND RAPIDS through WAYG and years later to BENTON HARBOR through WAYO. WAYFM was reaching an audience not serviced by any other radio station in WEST MICHIGAN as it pointed listeners to JESUS CHRIST and gave witness to changed lives through Him".
LEMKE continues, "WAYFM’s popularity peaked around 2005-06, overcoming several socio, market and economic hurdles. But in recent years these hurdles have become significantly more challenging. On NOVEMBER 29th, after months of prayer and godly counsel, WAYFM and WCSG will merge together, joining formats to build on each other’s strengths in an effort to become the most influential radio station in WEST MICHIGAN, not for our glory and not for the listener, but for JESUS CHRIST! Our commitment remains to clearly communicate JESUS' love through song and Spirit, encouraging, engaging and equipping people to lives in joy-filled service to Him".
LEMKE also mentioned that many listener favorites from WAYFM will continue to be heard on WCSG, as the disctinct line between the two formats has blurred over the past several years. No positions will be eliminated as a result of the merger, so no jobs will be lost.
