At SONY's International CES 2014 press conference MONDAY evening (1/6), Pres./CEO KAZUO HIRAI noted the rapid change in the consumer electronics industry but touted his company's success in the past year.
HIRAI brought out new SONY ELECTRONICS Pres./COO MIKE FASULO to make several product and content announcements. FASULO touted the studio's use of 4K cameras to shoot movies and TV shows to demonstrate the acceleration of 4K content production.
The company announced a new Hi-Res Audio push along with other labels including UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP, with a new line of speakers, headphones, and receivers to deliver the high-quality digital audio. On an entirely different front, FASULO touted the company's waterproof, self-contained digital headphones that users can wear and use while swimming.
Among the company's other product introductions were a new 4K video download service offering movie and TV programming from SONY PICTURES and other studios, integration with NETFLIX in new SONY 4K sets for 4K content access (with NETFLIX CEO REED HASTINGS on hand to make the announcement), collaboration with YOUTUBE on a new video decoder, several new HDTVs and Ultra HD sets, a line of seven new Handycam camcorders and, notably, a 4K version, a new Action Cam video camera, a new Alpha 5000 DSLR camera, a "Tennis Sensor" that attaches to the end of a racquet and analyzes a user's swing, new compact version of the Experia Z1 (going small when other manufacturers are making larger and larger phones) and Z1S (exclusive to T-MOBILE in the U.S.) mobile phone models (and a PlayStation 4 app), a wearable sensor system including the tiny Core device with "Lifelog" application, and a head-mounted display ("a theater on your head").
