Texas Hosts Running For Office Face Equal Time Rules

FCC equal time rules have taken two hosts off the air in the BIG BEND area of TEXAS while they run for office.
The BIG BEND SENTINEL reports that RIO GRANDE BROADCASTING CO. Oldies KVLF-A and Country KALP host JERRY SOTELLO, who handles news and sports play-by-play and hosts a Saturday morning show, is running for Judge in BREWSTER COUNTY in the MARCH primary, and one of his opponents signed a waiver to allow SOTELLO to continue broadcasting but the incumbent would not agree. SOTELLO's wife IDA SOARES SOTELLO is also a candidate for county Justice of the Peace, running against KALP weekender GILBERT VALENZUELA; she and two other candidates in that race signed waivers allowing VALENZUELA to remain on the air.
Meanwhile, at MARFA PUBLIC RADIO noncommercial KRTS/MARFA, TX, host DAVID BEEBE, who hosts music shows on FRIDAYs and TUESDAYs, is already a MARFA City Council member and is running for Justice of the Peace, and while one of his opponents said he would sign a waiver of his right to free airtime, the other said he would take the free time just so he and his cousin could host a radio music show. LUIS PIPPEN told the SENTINEL, "If I get a chance, I’m not having to pay for it or anything, that’d be great."
The primary elections are set for MARCH 4th.
