TRIBUNE Talk WGN-A/CHICAGO's plans for 87.7 FM -- the low-power TV station audio feed serving as a "virtual FM," which TRIBUNE is taking over via an LMA TODAY (2/17) at 1:02p (CT) -- involve a Sports format as "THE GAME 87.7 FM," reports ROBERTFEDER.COM.
The new format, which replaces the Alternative format on VENTURE TECHNOLOGIES LPTV WKQX-LP (to become WGWG-LP)/CHICAGO as the music moves to CUMULUS Alternative WKQX at 101.1 FM, will feature JONATHON BRANDMEIER, who has been doing his show on WGN's "WGN.FM" Internet stream, in mornings; WGN evening sports host DAVID KAPLAN and CHICAGO TRIBUNE columnist DAVID HAUGH in middays; WGN's ALEX QUIGLEY with BIG TEN NETWORK's HOWARD GRIFFITH in early afternoons; market veterans HARRY TEINOWITZ and SPIKE MANTON in late afternoons; WGN's MARK CARMAN for evenings; and NBC SPORTS RADIO for overnights. FEDER reports that WGN's JORDAN BERNFIELD will serve as reporter, and that with the move of KAPLAN to the FM signal, WGN will move PETE MCMURRAY up to 7-11p weeknights.
Pres./GM JIMMY DECASTRO said, “We’re going after a young, more educated sports audience. We want this to be young and hip and fun.”
The lease for 87.7 FM runs through SEPTEMBER 2015, which is the present sunset for analog LPTV stations. If the deadline for digital conversion is not extended, the use of the audio from VHF channel 6 LPTVs as FM stations at 87.7 FM will end at that time.
