Legendary PUGET SOUND college radio station, GREEN RIVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE Alternative KGRG/AUBURN, WA is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of its seminal “Today’s Rock” format with a month-long bash on air, online, and in the clubs.
Run exclusively by college students over the years, KGRG is the only PACIFIC NORTHWEST station to have simultaneously helped launch the careers of major artists as well as the careers of professional radio broadcasters for the past two-and-a-half decades. Bands such as NIRVANA, MUDHONEY, PRESIDENTS OF THE USA, MXPX, MODEST MOUSE, along with scores of others, performed in GREEN RIVEr’s LINDBLOOM STUDENT CENTER at fundraisers for non-commercial KGRG. Literally hundreds of professional radio broadcasters got their start at GREEN RIVER’s student station. EDWARD R. MURROW AWARD winner CHARLIE HARGER (KOMO-A/F/SEATTLE), PEDRO & LUCIANA BARTES (KJR/SEATTLE), CANDY (KHTP/SEATTLE), KEVIN DIERS & IAN REAS (KISW/SEATTLE), KIMI KLINE (KIRO/SEATTLE), TONY MINER (KIRO/SEATTLE), LARRY LOMAX (KCMS/SEATTLE), COREY OLSON (KTRH/HOUSTON), DAVE STYLES (MYFM/LOS ANGELES), DARREN ROSE (KYSR/LOS ANGELES), EMILY MAGUIRE (KFMB-FM/SAN DIEGO), DJ NO NAME (formerly of KNDD/SEATTLE), and JULIE PILAT (formerly of KIIS/LOS ANGELES) are but a few alumni.
The “25th Anniversary Spring Pledge Drive” kicks off the celebration MAY 2nd and features lots of limited edition 25th Anniversary merchandise and other special treats for listeners. Alumni Week features many of the illustrious alumni who will return to 89.9FM MAY 19th-23rd and take over the airwaves daily from 3-10p. On MAY 26th, the station pays tribute to NIRVANA, who played a fundraising concert for KGRG on May 26th, 1989. As a celebration finale, KGRG presents an all-ages “Today’s Rock” concert on FRIDAY, JUNE 6th. Rising stars “MONETA” headlines the bill at LOUIE G’s in FIFE, WA.
