ALLSTATE is trying an outdoor campaign in CHICAGO that incorporates a very-low-power FM "station" to reach drivers stuck in traffic at a notoriously slow six-way intersection. CRAIN'S CHICAGO BUSINESS reports that the insurance company has installed a billboard and low-power transmitter at Elston, Western and Diversey Avenues for "MAYHEM 99.1 FM," using the "MAYHEM" character played by DEAN WINTERS in the long-running television campaign for the company.
The radio spots on the transmitter, written by ad copywriter DAVID SCHERMER, include a version of MOZART's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" using car crash noises, and other spots with the character personifying news and locally relevant things like gyro meat and a "martial arts dojo on Western."
