On AUGUST 15th, NEXTRADIO celebrated the first anniversary of its partnership with SPRINY utilizing the FM chip in smartphones. Thus is's an appropriate time to measure its' growth. The latest data found that one year in, there have been over 785,000 app downloads (up 115,000 downloads since the JULY 28th update); users tune in to over 10,200 radio stations (an increase of over 250 stations), and who listened for over 970,000 hours, a 24% increase of over 190,000 hours.
What's more, there are now 25 devices preloaded with the NEXTRADIO app by SPRINT, BOOST MOBILE and VIRGIN MOBILE. A number of HTC models are FM-enabled and support NEXTRADIO on all carriers. That brought the market reach of FM-enabled smartphones to well over 5 million in one year. Listeners use NEXTRADIO to tune into 3,000 different FM stations each day, as 60-90% of stations in the top-50 markets are delivering enhanced content to the app, and 40% of NEXTRADIO listening happens between 10a-3p, filling the gap between drive times.
The TAGSTATION blog posting admits that more work needs to be done. "We know we still face an uphill climb when it comes to achieving support from more wireless carriers and complete acceptance from our own industry, but we’re proud of what has been achieved since last year’s launch."
