GRACE BROADCASTING Christian AC WDVW (105.3 THE DOVE)/JACKSON, TN, has flipped formats to Classic Hits WHHP (HIPPIE RADIO 105.3).
"We closed it out with the 'Hallelujah Chorus' with THE BROOKLYN TABERNACLE CHOIR," 73-year-old on-air personality TOM MAPES told the JACKSON SUN. "I'm still on the payroll, but I'm in a holding pattern, and I'm reminded of my favorite Bible verse, Proverbs 3:5-6, 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.'"
Owners LACY and brother CHARLES said THE HIPPIE 105.3 signed on last WEDNESDAY at midnight, and hope MAPES will agree to move to their co-owned ALAMO, TN-based southern gospel outlet WWGM (93.1).
"If you are in your 50s, it's the music you grew up with," LACY said. "BRAD McCOY will have the morning show from 6a to 9a (ET), and GREG RIVERS, who was with FOREVER SOUTH LICENSING Classic Rock WYNU-F (ROCK 92.3)/MILAN, TN, the afternoon drive."
"If we broaden our format, it will help what we lose with THE DOVE," added LACY. "We'll have a whole new listenership, and there has been a lot more positive comments than negative comments about the change."
MAPES has been with GRACE BROADCASTING for the last six-and-a-half years, and a segment of his program was to award a weekly "Angel Award." He received the DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD in 2005 at the JACKSON-MADISON COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME banquet. That same year, he had prostate cancer surgery.
"I've known it for two months the format was changing the first of the year, so it was not a shock," said MAPES. "It's just a business decision, and this will give me an opportunity to do other things, but I'm disappointed GRACE BROADCASTING would choose to go away from a Christian format to secular."
