Sen. John Thune: Commerce Committee Plans Communications Act Revamp
January 30, 2015 at 3:54 AM (PT)
Sen. JOHN THUNE (R-SD) told the AMERICAN ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE in a speech WEDNESDAY (1/28) that the Senate Commerce Committee will start to work on rewriting the Communications Act in the next few months.
THE HILL reports that THUNE, voicing concern about "an increasingly imperious President" proposing regulating the Internet under Title II of the Act, said that the FCC's willingness to go along shows "the consequences of that obsolescence (of the present law) and the need for action."
The House Energy and Commerce Committee is already reviewing the Act; THUNE said his chamber's process will look at the Act as well but he declined to be specific about what a revision would include, although he mentioned that the panel would consider spectrum issues, video policy, and universal Internet service.
