Digital Exec David Ring Leaves Universal Music Group

In a letter he sent to music industry contacts, RING said: “It has been my sincere privilege to have had the chance to help UMG and its talented labels and artists navigate the massive changes required to transition from the CD business to the exhilarating digital business of today and tomorrow.”
The shake-up at UMG comes in the midst of potential groundbreaking negotiations with YOUTUBE, APPLE and SPOTIFY, with GRAINGE looking to promote paid subscription options rather than free, ad-supported streaming, like his recent deal with VESSEL for music videos (NET NEWS, 2/19).
Last year, UNIVERSAL hired MICHAEL LANG, who had previously run MIRAMAX and worked on NEWS CORP.’s distribution efforts, as a consultant whose role in the digital area could now increase.
