FKA TWIGS, ASAP ROCK, GEORGE CLINTON, LA MONTE YOUNG and an all-star tribute to ARTHUR RUSSELL are among the events at this year's RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY FESTIVAL NEW YORK, set for MAY 1st through 30th.
The month-long NEW YORK event, which represents the ongoing legacy of the world-traveling RED BULL MUSIC ACADENY, which set up shop in N.Y.C. in 2013, brings a program that explores and celebrates the city's rich cultural heritage while spotlighting the modern music landscape. The festival will put on a multifaceted program presenting live performances, club nights, lectures and workshops at some of the city's most iconic venues, featuring local innovators, international trailblazers and long-standing members of the RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY family.
This year's series includes the debut of FKA TWIGS presents CONGREGATA live show extravaganza, an all-star two-night tribute to the late disco pioneer ARTHUR RUSSELL and public conversations with Harlem rap hero A$AP ROCKY, funk legend GEORGE CLINTON and pioneering minimalist LA MONTE YOUNG.The festival will also bring back some of N.Y.C.'s most legendary, now-defunct underground parties like FRANKIE BONES' STORM RAVE and VENUS X's GHE20GOTH1K.
Acclaimed underground label TRI ANGLE RECORDS will celebrate its fifth anniversary in an abandoned WALL STREET bank vault featuring close label associates like HOLY OTHER, THE HAZAN CLOAK, FOREST SWORDS and RBMA alumni EVIAN CHRIST, while PC MUSIC & SOPHIE will present an all-new live concept at media and arts space BRIC HOUSE. Local tropical bass collective QUE BAJO?! will take over another night, and a daytime outdoor dancehall party will feature appearances by the legendary KING JAMMY, upstarts ASSASSIN, SPICE, LISA HYPE, RICKY BLAZE AND THE MIXPAK and FEDERATION SOUND SYSTEMS.
Additional events include a celebration of innovative electronic music from the AFRICAN continent with NOZINJA, ISLAM CHIPSY and EEK, TITICA and DJ SPOKO; a specially commissioned show from drummer KID MILLIONS at BROOKLYN MUSEUM's BEAUX-ARTS COURT; a wild installment of the transgressive NOTHING CHANGES night with MERZBOW, GENESIS P-ORRIDGE and AARON DILLOWAY of WOLF EYES, PRURIENT, PHARMAKON, RON MORELLI and more.
