Condolences to family and friends of longtime BIRMINGHAM radio personality JOHN ED WILLOUGHBY, who died WEDNESDAY morning (3/25) after a long illness at 80, according to the BIRMINGHAM NEWS/AL.COM.
WILLOUGHBY started in radio doing commercials for his father's business, WILLOUGHBY FURNITURE CO., on TOMMY CHARLES and DOUG LAYTON's show on WAQY-A. In 1975, he began calling into CHARLES' WSGN-A show in character and became CHARLES' co-host as "T.C. AND JOHN ED"; CHARLES and WILLOUGHBY later moved briefly to WVOK-A and WQUS (U.S. 99) and then to WERC-A, where they were paired until CHARLES' passing in 1996. WILLOUGHBY then teamed with LAYTON for the morning show at WERC, moving to crosstown WAPI-A in 1998 before retiring in 2005; he later hosted a weekend sports show with LAYTON for WJOX-A, WYDE-A-F (101.1 FM THE SOURCE), and WZNN (97.3 THE ZONE) until about three years ago.
