An intimate evening last night (5/12) in LOS ANGELES with DOT RECORDS recording superstar STEVEN TYLER, who is embarking on a musical departure into Country, at the famed SUNSET MARQUIS and NIGHTBIRD STUDIOS for a meet & greet and listening party of his new Country single released today, "Love Is Your Name," from his forthcoming Country album later this year, clearly won over everyone in the room.
On hand were such notables as BMLG Pres./CEO SCOTT BORCHETTA, DOT GM CHRIS STACEY, DOT VP/Promotion KRIS LAMB, Promotion Manager RACHEL DOBSON, BMLG SVP/Pop Promotion DAVID NATHAN, BMLG VP/Partnership Marketing & Promotion Strategy JOHN ZARLING, BMLG Sr. Manager/Partnership Marketing SARAH McGRADY, BMLG Dir./Partnership Marketing JACKIE CAMPBELL, and of course, TYLER hosting some very excited radio and media execs like:
CBS RADIO SVP/Programming Initiatives MICHAEL MARTIN, TOWNSQUARE MEDIA SVP/Programming KURT JOHNSON, KNCI/SACRAMENTO PD BYRON KENNEDY, KSON/SAN DIEGO PD KEVIN CALLAHAN, KMLE/PHOENIX PD TIM RICHARDS, KNIX/Phoenix PD STEVE GEOFFERIES, PREMIERE Dir./Country Programming JUSTIN COLE, KRTY/SAN JOSE PD NATE DEATON, KKGO/LOS ANGELES Station Mgr. MICHAEL LEVINE, KKGO morning co-host GRAHAM BUNN, KFRG/RIVERSIDE MD/morning man SCOTT WARD, ALBRIGHT, O'MALLEY, BRENNER's BECKY BRENNER, COUNTRY COUNTDOWN USA host LON HELTON, ALL ACCESS Pres. Publisher JOEL DENVER, ALL ACCESS/NASHVILLE Editor R.J. CURTIS and many others.
R.J. CURTIS noted, "After listening to the majority of the album, response from radio was very enthusiastic and universally positive, with programmers saying TYLER's lead single, "Love Is Your Name," is just one of at least three potential Country singles from the project.
"SCOTT BORCHETTA used the words 'Album Of The Year' candidate when talking about what will be the finished product. Country radio will have several choices of air-worthy song choices but there's a subtext to the album too. Other songs are potentially embraceable by Triple A radio programmers and there are several more straightahead rockers because that's just who TYLER is. But TYLER has set himself up for critical praise and commercial airplay at the same time. This will allow new and existing fans the chance to peel back another layer or two on TYLER -- and they will love what's deep inside.
"STEVEN TYLER shared a story about hearing -- and loving -- 'The Battle Of New Orleans' as a nine-year-old. This was an early introduction to Country music for him and apparently that passion has remained. In recent months he has been living in NASHVILLE and immersing himself in the tight-knit songwriting community there. Familiar and successful names like THE WARREN BROTHERS, BRETT JAMES, ERIC PASLAY, HILARY LINDSEY and others were mentioned as the songwriter crowd TYLER has been hanging with in MUSIC CITY."
CURTIS continued, "TYLER demonstrated a genuine feel for Country -- the essence of which is stories and how they're interpreted through song. This is a dialed-back TYLER vocally and production-wise, but you still feel his signature powerful, soulful presence. He's not out of character or trying too hard. In fact, he's trying less here -- pushing less. STEVEN TYLER can really sing -- always could. But the result of his less-is-more approach vocals on this project for DOT is somewhat transformational for TYLER. The songs and stores are the thing here; his always amazing vocal skills are the delivery vehicle and he's more storyteller than crooner.
"One incredible, 'behind the curtain' moment came when TYLER played a very raw demo of a tune called 'What Am I Doing Right.' He told the room he and THE WARREN BROTHERS demoed the song within 10 minutes of finishing it -- but nine hours after starting it. So we heard TYLER delivering a song in its entirety for the first time ever -- and absolutely nailing it. Nothing short of an amazing evening."
