WEBB/Augusta, ME, Radio Personality Will Shave Head For Food Bank Fundraiser

RENEE NELSON, a radio personality for TOWNSQUARE MEDIA Country WEBB (B98.5)/AUGUSTA, ME, is raising money to help food banks in neary MAINE counties, according to a report in CENTRALMAINE.COM, dubbing the drive, HAIR FOR THE HUNGRY.
NELSON, the news and public service director for the station, has promised to shave her head on MAY 30th if she has raised at least $2,500 in donations for area food banks. SUPER CUTS, who will do the honors, has agreed to match that figure, for a total of $5,000. NELSON, who has raised more than $1,300 to date, said the money will be distributed to 21 local food banks that the station supports during its annual fall TANKSGIVING fundraiser, which has featured personalities broadcasting from a tank outside CAMP KEYES in AUGUSTA.
“I don’t want to stop at $5,000,” NELSON said. “I want to raise as much money as I can.”
NELSON's dramatic news is a way of celebrating her birthday in AUGUST, and doing a good deed.
“It started as a joke,” she said. “But as I thought about it and realized I could do this and do some good, it was a no-brainer to say I would do it.
“But I did not want to wait for my birthday. It was important to me to do it so some of my hair would grow back by then.”
ABIGAIL PERRY, Director of the AUGUSTA FOOD BANK, says the donation couldn't come at a better time because food stocks have decreased in the spring, when there is less focus on feeding the hungry.
Added PERRY: “It’s raising awareness of the issue in a way some other, more traditional, fundraisers or events may not be able to do.”
Those who wish to donate to HAIR FOR THE HUNGRY can do so online at uwkv.org/tanksgiving or at any SUPER CUTS in MAINE, including AUGUSTA and WATERVILLE. For more information visit online at b985.fm/category/hair-for-the-hungry/.
