iHEARTMEDIA News-Talk WHO-A/DES MOINES afternoon host SIMON CONWAY got a huge surprise when he held a fundraising remote broadcast from a local restaurant to solicit donations for the PUPPY JAKE FOUNDATION, which trains service dogs to be given for free to wounded combat veterans. Only about 30 minutes into the show, during which the restaurant donated 10% of its profits to the cause, a woman walked in and donated $20,000, the cost of acquisition, two years' worth of training, and hand-over of a service dog.
CONWAY tells ALL ACCESS, "We'd been going about 30 minutes. Even at 4.30 in the afternoon, the restaurant was pretty full, when in walked this lady. I saw her chatting to the charity's founder and then it was whispered in my ear, 'She just gave us $20,000.00!' I was numb for a few seconds. The lady wanted complete anonymity. Her dad was a VIETNAM Vet who had left her some money and she wanted it to go to a Veterans' cause. She said she'd been listening to me for weeks and simply had to come in and make the donation. Just incredible."
The fundraiser collected around $25,000 in three hours.
