Innovative jazz composer and saxophonist ORNETTE COLEMAN has died of cardiac arrest in MANHATTAN at the age of 85, VARIETY reports.
COLEMAN first gained notoriety for his albums on the CONTEMPORARY and ATLANTIC labels. His liberated "free jazz" approach "deployed radically new approaches to melody, harmony, rhythm, intonation and pitch," CHRIS MORRIS wrote. "Over time, he would refer to his body of musical theory as 'harmolodics.'”
COLEMAN would eventually receive a lifetime achievement award from THE RECORDING ACADEMY. Divorced from wife JAYNE CORTEZ in 1964, he is survived by his son.
