WXST (Star 99.7)/Charleston, SC Halts Regular Programming To Cover Charleston Shooting Deaths
June 18, 2015 at 1:27 PM (PT)
APEX BROADCASTING Urban AC WSXT (STAR 99.7)/CHARLESTON, SC dispensed with regular programming to cover the nine shooting deaths that took place at the historic EMANUEL AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH.
The 21-year old shooting suspect DYLANN ROOF has been captured and taken into custody. City officials believe it to be a hate crime.
PD STEVE CRUMBLEY told ALL ACCESS, "We pre-empted the STEVE HARVEY MORNING SHOW and went wall-to-wall news coverage. I was on the air until 2 this afternoon. When we did play music, it was Inspirational. We talked with victim family members, local and state leaders, listeners, posted the suspects picture on our FACEBOOK Page, and Tweeted every time we learned anything pertaining to this story. We are still covering the events of this horrible happening."
CRUMBLEY added "This has been such a tragedy for this city. To me, I have been impressed to see CHARLESTON come together -- Black, White, Latino, and all races. TODAY there was no color in our city, only a town coming together. It was an entire city of people hurt and trying to heal. One of my personalities, D NYCE told me he had not seen such unity in CHARLESTON since HURRICANE HUGO."
Cluster sister stations Urban WMXZ-HD2 (99.3 THE BOX), Country WCKN (KICKIN' 92.5), and Hot AC WMXZ (MIX 96) also altered regular programming to cover the story.
A MOTHER EMANUEL FUND has been formed at WELLS FARGO BANK to help the families of the shooting victims. The CITY of CHARLESTON has pledged $5,000 to get things started. The website is www.motheremanuelhopefund.com.
Those wishing to contribute will also be able to do so at any WELLS FARGO Branch by specifying they'd like to donate to the MOTHER EMANUEL HOPE FUND.
