Harker Research: Nielsen's Voltair Answers Raises More Questions

In its first response to the recent NIELSEN webinar on VOLTAIR and the PPM, HARKER RESEARCH and its clients are still unsatisfied with what they heard and saw during the meeting. In the latest post on its Research Insights blog, Managing Partner GLENDA SHRADER BOS listed NIELSEN's conclusions -- that it doesn't support VOLTAIR, although it does "gain and extend codes" and "increases crackles and pops and can impact quality for listeners;" plus it stands behind PPM accuracy, even though it's improving the PPM to supposedly do what VOLTAIR does.
"Wait a minute ... we are not lawyers, but it sure sounded like there are problems with the current system," she wrote. "Every station that has a VOLTAIR box knows there are problems with PPM -- not a surprise. But the admission is interesting."
"So the 'first' story from NIELSEN is that VOLTAIR extends codes and gain -– making them audible, but Nielsen is now going to increase the codes and gain, but keep the code inaudible. We need to 'trust' that this will happen.
BOS' and HARKER's verdict: "We applaud NIELSEN for telling us more than the old ARBITRON Webinars; however according to our clients who watched the webinar, they saw a presentation that left them with more questions than answers."
