FACEBOOK INC. reported a 39% rise in second-quarter revenue, generating $4.04 billion for the three-month period ended JUNE 30th, compared with $2.91 billion a year earlier, the WALL STREET JOURNAL reports. That beat WALL STREET expectations of nearly $4 billion.
However, rising expenses sent FACEBOOK’s net income down 9.1%, to $719 million. Excluding certain expenses, FACEBOOK said it would have earned 50 cents per share. Analysts had projected earnings of 47 cents on that basis.
The number of users who check their account at least once a month grew from 1.44 billion to 1.49 billion, while daily users rose from 926 million to 968 million.
Mobile advertising represented about 76% of advertising revenue, compared with 73% in the first quarter and 62% in the second quarter a year ago. Market researcher eMARKETER estimates that FACEBOOK will capture 16% of the $69 billion mobile-ad market this year, second only to GOOGLE’s 35%.
