CUMULUS MEDIA Top 40 WWWM (STAR 105)/TOLEDO is stoking local controversy in its billboard campaign for morning host DENNY SCHAFFER, WAOW-TV reports. The billboard has put SCHAFFER's face into the body of CAITLYN JENNER from the VANITY FAIR cover, encouraging passersby to "transition to STAR 105," but not to call him CAITLYN.
LGBT and area activists have called the station to complain and demand that SCHAFFER be fired. Undaunted, the station has asked listeners for their reaction on its FACEBOOK page.
iHEARTRADIO syndicated air personality TOBY KNAPP, who's also APD at Top 40 WIHT (HOT 99.5)/WASHINGTON, DC, posted an editorial on the station website, entitled "Hate ... is NOT a marketing strategy!" criticizing the station and its ownership for its "hateful" billboard,
"The station which bought and paid for it should immediately pull it down and should apologize profusely for the pain they've caused with this straight-up hate," he wrote. "They should apologize to the LGBT community which may work for their station or stations -- for this... and they should immediately educate themselves on this, which is in itself a civil rights issue.
For his part, SCHAFFER, who considers himself be a "born-again Christian," said the billboard is simply a spoof of the magazine cover, describing JENNER as a "hero."
