Expect 2016 to start just as 2015 ended ... with ADELE's mammoth "25" topping the sales charts.
According to NIELSEN MUSIC, "25" sold another 363,000 equivalent album units for the week ending DECEMBER 31st to spend her sixth consecutive week at #1, for a total of 7.44 million U.S. sales, 307k of which were pure album sales. That is the biggest seller for any year since 2004, when USHER's "Confessions" sold 7.98 million, and in just six weeks to boot after its NOVEMBER 20th release.
Some more interesting factoids:
"25" is the first album to spend its first six weeks at the top spot since SUSAN BOYLE’s "I Dreamed A Dream," which also spent a half-dozen weeks at #1 from DECEMBER 12th, 2009 to JANUARY 16th, 2010.
It's the first album to spend at least five weeks in a row at #1 since the "Frozen" soundtrack scored eight straight #1s in early 2014, amassing a total of 13 nonconsecutive weeks at #1.
It's the first album released since 2001 to sell more than 300,000 copies in each of its first six weeks on sale since CREED's "Weathered" following its NOVEMBER 20th, 2001 debut.
