RENE ANGELIL, husband and manager of CELINE DION, passed away today in his LAS VEGAS home from cancer of the throat.
DION tweeted out the following: RENE ANGELIL, 73, passed away this morning at his home in LAS VEGAS after a long and courageous battle against cancer. The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment; more details will be provided at a later time.
ANGELIL was first diagnosed with cancer in 1998, when he had a tumor removed from his neck. His wife has been by her husband’s side for months, and recently returned to her VEGAS residency at the COLOSSEUM at CAESARS PALACE on AUGUST 27th at RENE's request.
After managing his wife for over 30 years, ANGELIL resigned in JUNE, 2014, due to his declining health, with former CIRQUE DU SOLEIL business head ALDO GIAMPAOLO taking over.
ANGELIL started out as a pop singer himself in the '60s as part of the FRENCH-CANADIAN group THE BARONETS, translating ENGLISH-language pop hits into FRENCH for the QUEBEC region. When the band broke up, RENE transitioned to a managing career, first meeting CELINE DION in 1980, when she was only 12. CELINE, one of 14 children, and her mother had sent RENE a demo tape, which moved him to tears. He mortgaged his first house to helop produce her first album, "La Voix Du Bon Dieu" ("The Voice Of The Good God"), and toured with her (and her mother) through CANADA, JAPAN and EUROPE.
As her manager, the twice-divorced RENE helped CELINE rise to international superstardom. The two began a romantic relationship in the early '90s when DION was still 19 and were married in 1994 in MONTREAL, a wedding that was televisd live in CANADA. An avid gambler, RENE once won $1.6 million in a 2007 poker tournament
ANGELIL is survived by their three sons: RENE-CHARLES and five-year-old twins EDDY and NELSON. He also has three children from previous marriages, PATRICK, JEAN-PIERRE and ANNE-MARIE.
The death was first reported by PEOPLE MAGAZINE.
