WIP/Philadelphia Host Big Daddy Graham Plagued By Hiccups

Longtime CBS RADIO Sports WIP/PHILADELPHIA fixture BIG DADDY GRAHAM has been sidelined by a case of the hiccups, PHILLY.COM reports. It all started about a week ago as GRAHAM prepared for his 2a shift. Even with the hiccups, decided to go start his shift, drinking as much water as he could during commercial breaks. Unfortunately, the intensity of the hiccuping just kept getting worse.
“I started getting bouts of three to four hiccups in a row,” he said. “It’s a hard thing to hide on the air.”
GRAHAM was able to finish his show and left on a prepaid NEW YORK CITY vacation, but had to return when the hiccups returned. After hiccupping for 41 hours straight, he begrudgingly agreed to get it checked. “It got so bad I wasn’t able to sleep,” he said. “But still, who goes to the doctor for hiccups?”
He spent over five hours in the emergency room of a NEW JERSEY hospital until it seemed his hiccuping problem had finally been cured. But “Ten minutes after they released me, I started hiccuping again,” GRAHAM said, who then went to JEFFERSON UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, where he was diagnosed as atrial fibrillation, or AFib.
“I’ve had three back surgeries, three throat surgeries, throat cancer and a mini-heart attack over LABOR DAY weekend,” GRAHAM said. “I’m a very bad eater with very bad hours, but that’s the price I pay for doing a job I don’t consider work.”
During his three-day stay in the hospital, GRAHAM still was able to come up with a comedy routine for WIP afternoon host JOSH INNES’ afternoon show where he seemed to call INNES' on-air, claiming to be in agonizing pain in the hospital. Unfortunately, a lot of listeners didn't get the joke. “An amazing number of people thought the bit was real,” he said.
“I’ve been in radio a long time, and INNES has a love/hate thing going on that I haven’t seen since the early days of HOWARD ESKIN,” he said. “People who hate INNES started texting me wondering what he was ripping on me.”
GRAHAM was released from the hospital on TUESDAY, and despite still dealing with hiccup flare-ups, he doesn’t plan to slow down. He'll return to his WIP show tomorrow (THURSDAY) night, then perform a comedy show at the TROPICANA in ATLANTIC CITY on SATURDAY.
