VIN SCULLY Avenue was dedicated this morning (4/11), as the city of LOS ANGELES renamed Elysian Park Avenue, the road that leads from Sunset Blvd. to the main parking lot entrance for DODGER STADIUM, after the Hall of Fame broadcaster, who is in his 67th and final season calling DODGER games on TV and radio. SCULLY, 88, began with the DODGERS in BROOKLYN in 1950; he currently calls home games on TIME WARNER CABLE's SPORTSNET LA, with the first three innings simulcast on iHEARTMEDIA Sports KLAC-A (AM 570 LA SPORTS)/LOS ANGELES. The ceremony included SCULLY and his wife SANDI, DODGER Spanish-language broadcaster and Hall of Famer JAIME JARRIN and his UNIVISION Talk KTNQ-A DODGER broadcast partner JORGE JARRIN (JAIME's son), SPORTSNET LA Spanish-language DODGER broadcaster PEPE YÑIGUEZ, LOS ANGELES Mayor ERIC GARCETTI, DODGER President/CEO STAN KASTEN, Councilman GIL CEDILLO, and former Council member ROZ WYMAN, who was instrumental in bringing the DODGERS to LOS ANGELES after the 1957 season.
“VIN is as much a part of the fabric of the Dodgers as the athletes whose exploits he has described to the delight of the fans for nearly seven decades,” said KASTEN. “It is altogether fitting the avenue leading to the stadium where so much of that drama has unfolded bears his name.”
“VIN SCULLY is a LOS ANGELES treasure -- a man who has given life and voice to the story of baseball in our city since the day it began,” said GARCETTI. “I am honored to stand beside the DODGERS today and pay homage to VIN on behalf of our city and on behalf of the generations of Angelenos who have been lucky enough to spend their summer afternoons with him.”
“The city is thrilled to be honoring such a legend in LOS ANGELES. DODGER fans span beyond the First District and beyond the city of LOS ANGELES, with everyone knowing the voice of VIN SCULLY,” said CEDILLO, who spearheaded the campaign to name the street after SCULLY. “When Angelenos attend a DODGER game, they will now say, ‘turn on to VIN SCULLY Ave.’ VIN will be immensely missed, but we wish him well as he kicks off his final season in broadcasting. We would also thank the LOS ANGELES DODGERS for planting more than 40 new trees and repairing much needed sidewalks along the street.”
SCULLY will also be honored with pregame ceremonies before TOMORROW's home opener and with special promotions including a t-shirt, bobblehead, and VIN SCULLY Appreciation Night on SEPTEMBER 23rd.
